Essential oil extraction method refers to the method of extracting essential oil from natural plants. Common essential oil extraction methods include steam distillation, freezing compression (Pressing), chemical solvent extraction, oil separation (Enfleurage), CO2 Supercritical extraction, soaking method.
Distillation method is the most commonly used method for the extraction of essential oils from aromatic plants, almost 95% of natural herb essentials are obtained by distillation. In this method, aromatic plant parts (flowers, leaves, wood chips, resin, root bark, etc.) are placed in a large container (distiller), then heated and burned or steamed at the bottom of the container. When the hot steam fills the container, the aromatic essential oil components of the plant will evaporate with the water vapor, pass through the condensing tube above, finally go into the condenser. The condenser is a spiral tube surrounded by cold water to allow the steam to cool into oil-water mixture, which then flows into an oil-water separator. The oil which is lighter than water will float on the surface, heavier than water will sink to the bottom, and the water left is the hydrolat. The essential oil and hydrolat will be further separated by a separation funnel. Distillation method is divided into up-water distillation, in-water distillation and water vapor distillation, which should be selected according to the characteristics of different materials.
CO2 Supercritical extraction method is widely used in essential oil extract method too. Supercritical carbon dioxide has special solubility of plant essential oils, and its solubility is related to density, which can be adjusted by temperature and pressure to precipitate the essential oils. Firstly, use specific equipment to achieve supercritical carbon dioxide (temperature above 32℃, pressure above 7.2 mpa). Secondly, extract the essential oil from the material. Thirdly, separate the essential oil by changing the temperature and pressure. Therefore, supercritical extraction is composed of extraction and separation.
